Anode-free sodium battery will reduce the cost and size of gadgets

A typical lithium-ion battery has two electrodes—a cathode and an anode. They transfer ions in an electrolyte solution

each other when the device is charging and discharging. Scientists at Washington University in St. Louis tried to replace lithium with sodium metal. 

Why were researchers interested in him? The fact is that sodium metal is a widespread material.

When creating a power source, scientists refusedfrom the anode, adding a thin layer of copper foil instead. It sits on the anode side of the pantograph, which collects free electrons as the battery discharges and directs them to the powered device.

A thin layer of copper acts as one of theelectrodes. The result is a power source that is significantly smaller and cheaper to produce than analogues. At the same time, the performance of such a battery does not suffer. The authors of the development note that such a battery will reduce the cost and size of gadgets.

When this experimental battery is being charged,instead of ions passing from the cathode through the separating material to the anode, they are superimposed on the copper foil and turn into a shiny, smooth metal. Then, when the battery is discharged, the material dissolves and the ions return to the cathode.
