Antarctica temperature breaks new record - 18.3 ° C

According to the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO), record heat was recorded in

Argentine research station Esperanza on the Antarctic Peninsula on February 6, 2020.

Checking this maximum temperature is important because it helps build a picture of the weather and climate at one of Earth's last frontiers.

Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of WMO

Antarctic Peninsula is one of the regionsthe fastest warming planets. Over the past 50 years, temperatures have risen by almost 3 ° C. The new temperature record is in line with the climate change we are observing, the UN said.

Previously, WMO did not recognize even higher valuestemperatures - 20.75 °C - reported on February 9, 2020  at a Brazilian automated permafrost monitoring station on nearby Seymour Island. It is located near a peninsula that extends north towards South America.

The previous confirmed record for the Antarctic continent - the mainland and its surrounding islands - was 17.5 ° C, recorded at Esperanza on March 24, 2015.
