Apple unveils M2 Ultra, "the world's most powerful chip ever made for a PC"

Today, on the first day of WWDC, Apple introduced a new chip for computers - the M2 Ultra.

It is equipped with the updated Mac Studio and Mac Pro models, which also debuted on this day. But first things first.

What's new

To date, M2 Ultra is the most powerful chipin the Apple line. Although Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technology, immodestly stated at the presentation that this is "the world's most powerful chip ever created for a personal computer." And his numbers are truly impressive.

So the M2 Ultra is built using5nm second-generation process technology and uses Apple's revolutionary UltraFusion technology to fuse the dies of the two M2 Max chips, doubling the chip's performance. The M2 Ultra contains 134 billion transistors, 20 billion more than the M1 Ultra. The powerful CPU is 20% faster than the M1 Ultra, the GPU is up to 30% faster, and the Neural Engine is 40% faster. The powerful media engine doubles the capabilities of the M2 Max and allows the M2 Ultra to play up to 22 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video—far more than any PC chip can do. The engine also supports up to six Pro Display XDRs with a resolution of over 100 million pixels.

Finally, the unified memory architecture supports up to 192GB of memory, 50% more than the M1 Ultra, and delivers 800GB/s memory bandwidth—double that of the M2 Max.

With these improvements, Apple says the M2 Ultra takes Mac performance to a whole new level.
