Apple patented magnetic connector to replace Lightning port

Apple may equip future models with a new proprietary connector, according to the patent.

Patent filed

Apple, in the US Patent and Trademark Office, describes a three-pin magnetic charger that connects to the appropriate pad on a smartphone or tablet.

The difference with MagSafe, introduced with the iPhone 12, is that the new type of connector is designed to be placed on the end of the device.

The cable and the place on the smartphone body where it iswill be connected, equipped with magnets that allow it to be securely fixed. In this case, there will be a small recess on the body with a depth of several millimeters.

This design excludes the ingress of moisture or small particles such as dust into the smartphone.

Perhaps in future devices MagSafe will be used to connect accessories, and the patented connector will be exclusively for charging.
