It was the fall detector that helped save a lifeA 67-year-old Norwegian named Toralv Ostwang, who was found unconscious on the bathroom floor in his house. Ostwang was at home alone and fainted. Apple Watch spotted a fall and automatically called emergency assistance. Police arrived and the man was hospitalized with bleeding and three fractures on his face. His daughter said that if it weren’t for a smart watch, Toralv could have died.

It could have been much worse. All morning we asked ourselves: “What if he did not wear a smart watch?” He did not take the phone to the bathroom. It's amazing that he was able to get help so quickly thanks to the alarm. The fall was serious and perhaps this [alarm] saved his life.

All Apple Watch owners 65 years old andolder, automatic fall detection is enabled by default. If you are not yet 65 years old, you can enable it yourself: open the Watch application on your iPhone, go to the “Emergency Call - SOS” tab and put the slider next to “Fall Detection” in the active position.
