Apps from Google Play Store almost stopped asking for access to SMS and call log

The Google Play Store has become more strict on apps that are allowed access to SMS and call logs.

What is known

At I/O 2019, Google reported that over the past few months, the number of apps asking for permission to make calls and send messages has decreased by 98%.

The company began these changes back in October 2018of the year. Currently, only apps that are selected to send SMS or make calls will require this permission. Google has also tightened its review process for new apps. Under the new rules, developers will have to wait longer before their apps are approved. Google said this is to ensure apps are of high quality before they appear on the Play Store.
