Astronomers chemically analyze over 100 stars in a globular cluster

Globular clusters are clusters of tightly bound stars orbiting galaxies. With their help you can

study the evolution of stars and galaxies. In particular, globular clusters can help researchers better understand the formation history and evolution of early-type galaxies.

Located approximately 19.5 thousand.Light years away, the galaxy NGC 6553 is rich in metals. Its star clusters are about 13 billion years old and have a mass of about 235 thousand solar masses. Until now, little was known about the chemical composition of the stars in this galaxy.

Therefore, a group of astronomers conducted a chemical NGC6553 in a sample of 116 stars. The results revealed that the stars have an excess of five elements - oxygen, magnesium, silicon, calcium and titanium. In addition, the study found no internal variation in the abundance of alpha and iron peak elements .

The average iron abundance in a sample of stars from NGC 6553 was found to be -0.1. However, the authors did not find a significant variation in its content.
