Astronomers have found a planet near the Earth: it has a very strange orbit

A team of astronomers led by Adriana Errico of the University of South Queensland in Australia reports

discovery of a giant planet orbiting HD 83443. Previously, scientists only assumed that it exists there.

A newly discovered alien world has receiveddesignation HD 83443 c. The results show that this planet has a dynamic mass of about 1.5 that of Jupiter and orbits its star every 22.6 years at a distance of about 8 astronomical units.

Astronomers stressed that HD 83443 c is rotatingin orbit with an unusually large eccentricity of 0.76. The researchers also noted that HD 83443 is a spectacular rare example of a well-characterized system containing both a hot Jupiter and a giant planet with a large eccentricity.

The new discovery was made possible byanalysis of radial velocity data obtained from four instruments. Thus, astronomers used the Echelle spectrograph of University College London UCLES on the 3.9-meter Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), the high-resolution HIRES echelle spectrometer on the Keck telescope, the HARPS high-precision planetary search system on the 3.6-meter ESO La Silla telescope , as well as the MINERVA-Australis telescope array at Mount Kent Observatory.

Located just 133 light years fromEarth, HD 83443 is a star with a metallicity twice that of the sun. Its age is estimated at 2.64 billion years, and the effective temperature is about 5,429 Kelvin (5,155.850 ℃). It is known that near HD 83443 there is a hot Jupiter, the exoplanet HD 83443 b with a mass of about 0.41 Jupiter masses. It revolves around the star approximately every three days. Now scientists have found another planet in this extrasolar system. The space object is described in detail in an article published on the arXiv preprint server.
