Over time, the white dwarf draws matter from its companion, heats it up. Then there is a powerful burst of energy that ejects matter at high speed.
A bright nova usually disappears within a couple of daysweeks or longer. But on June 12, 2021, astronomers spotted the new star V1674 Hercules, which flared up so brightly that it could be seen with the naked eye. A little more than 24 hours later she became weak again. It was as if someone had turned a flashlight on and off. Previously, the fastest nova was recorded in 1991.
Every 501 seconds in V1674 Hercules there isa vibration that can be seen in both visible light waves and X-rays. A year after its explosion, the star's brightness still fluctuates.
Scientists are still trying to understand how such an unusual star formed. This information will also help astronomers learn more about our solar system and even the universe as a whole.
