Astronomers learn unexpected details about the history of Mars from an ancient meteorite

We are talking about the Chassigny meteorite, which fell to Earth in 1815: now scientists have carried out a new analysis and made

unexpected conclusions. It turns out that volatile gases such as carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen did not appear on Mars in the same way as current popular theories say.

According to current models, planets are bornfrom the remains of a star. Stars form from a hazy cloud of dust and gas when a dense clump of matter collapses under the force of gravity. It rotates and collects more and more material to grow.

This material forms a disc that rotates aroundnew star. Inside this disk there is dust and gas: they start to collect together. The result is a new young planet. Evidence from the solar system confirms that it formed in the same way about 4.6 billion years ago.

According to modern models, moltenthe forming planet absorbs volatile gases from the solar nebula. Because the planet is very hot and soft at this stage, volatiles enter the magma ocean and are then partially released into the atmosphere as the mantle cools.

After analyzing the Chassigny meteorite, it turned out that its composition of noble gases differs from the Martian atmosphere. Researchers have suggested that the piece of rock is part of the planet's interior.

It turned out that the isotopes of krypton in the meteoritecorrespond to isotopes of chondritic meteorites, not the solar nebula. This means that meteorites carried various elements to Mars earlier than scientists thought.

In addition, it turned out that the atmosphere of the planet is notcould have formed only due to the release of gases from the mantle, since then the samples would have had a different composition. Most likely, Mars formed the atmosphere from the solar nebula after the magma cooled.
