A recently passed law requires thatInternet service providers helped police hack social media accounts and apps and spy on users. The law went through the approval stages very quickly, and now the police were able to track and even seize the accounts of users suspected of serious crimes, without a court decision.
According to a publication by the Australian Home Secretary, the law was passed to take the fight against drug trafficking, terrorism and other serious crimes to a new level.
The publication notes that the lawThis applies to any offense punishable by a prison term of at least three years, which may include actions not directly related to crime or terrorism. Authorizations for such police actions will be issued by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal instead of the courts.
Many experts have already spoken out against the law andThey called it a way of turning the police “into judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one.” According to critics, both the wording and mechanism of the law raise many questions about the appropriateness of its application.
