KMW will begin upgrading its Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks in 2023. At the same time, the timing of the work and the number of combat vehicles that will have to undergo an upgrade have not yet been specified.
Leopard 2A4 will receive new armor elements, sights and a fire control system. Electromechanical systems will be installed instead of hydraulic systems. Externally, the Leopard 2A4 will also resemble the Leopard 2A7.
According to Defense24, the Austrian army is armed with approximately 40-56 tanks. In addition, up to 15 more Leopard 2A4 units can be stored.
Leopard 2A4 appeared in 1985 as the lastversion of the tank at that time. It is equipped with a 120 mm Rh-120 L/44 smoothbore gun and a coaxial 7.62 mm NG3 machine gun. The 12-liter MTU MB 873 Ka-501 engine with a capacity of 1500 horsepower allows the tank to reach a speed of 68 km/h (31 km/h when moving backwards).
