Automatic destroyer of people and equipment: how Russian military robots scared Europe at the West-2021 exercise

Our military-industrial complex once again flexed its muscles in exercises in which over 200 thousand (!

) military personnel. The European Union immediately called the exercises “aggressive” and “threatening the security” of Eastern Europe, and, just in case, flew reconnaissance planes along the borders to see what equipment was being fired from and how. Our readers don’t have to jump on a plane to do this - here’s a brief summary of the technology from the latest Russian exercises, with pros and cons and without propaganda. Discuss

We are already accustomed to the fact that every year largeRussian exercises give us reasons to discuss new domestic military know-how. This news feed gives us the opportunity to laugh sometimes, sometimes to be proud, sometimes to swear in despair, they say, where is our, in the past, the most powerful military industry heading ?!

The year 2021 was no exception. How Russia decided to scare sleepy Europeans this year - in our article.

Another uninhabited tower B-19

All interest is focused rather on the combat module"Epoch". This module can be installed on both the BMP-2 and BMP-3 platforms, and in the future on the promising Kurganets platform, T-15 and God knows what other versions, Russia has a lot of them today.

Essentially, the module adheres increasinglythe principle of uninhabitability, which is gaining popularity in Russian armored vehicles. The turret is inconspicuous, and the machine gun, cannon and missile armament is densely packed. The basis of firepower is the AGS-57 gun, or LShU-57, where LShU is a light assault weapon.

Back in the mid-2000s, this systempositioned as a light artillery complex and rolled on a two-wheeled machine (it was supposed to be mounted on equipment), and then it was considered a grenade launcher, basically it was supposed to equip the airborne forces with them. Today they have come up with a new name for it - a weapon of low ballistics. Whether this weapon stands in the Epoch today, or today something new is hiding under this abbreviation - it is still difficult to say.

Model with BM Epoch, the block of guided missiles Bulat is clearly visible

Courage2004

In general, it looks like the development of a new complex, likethe alternative "Burevestnik-BM" is associated with insufficient firepower of 30-mm automatic cannons in general. Without a muzzle brake, it will now be possible to use a very diverse ammunition load, they even talked about ammunition of increased power up to 1500 grams. It is even more important that the ammunition load can now also contain guided ammunition: unlike 30-mm ammunition, it can already be expected to accommodate electronic filling. This weapon will also work in order to shoot down drones, due to the good elevation angle of up to 70 degrees.

With this novelty in equal combat effectivenessboth hinged and flat trajectories are available. We get something in between a cannon and a grenade launcher, that is, a contraption that allows you to get people wherever they go. Otherwise, everything is pretty familiar: PKTM (modernized tank Kalashnikov machine gun), containers with four Kornets (anti-tank missile system).

Separately, you should also pay attention to the block witheight TPK. This missile system "Bulat", guided missiles and the ability to defeat up to 8 targets at the same time. Information about them today is not that there is, but so far it is very streamlined. One thing is obvious, these are missiles for hitting less valuable targets, to save Cornets, and they are also more suitable due to controllability to fight highly maneuverable ground opponents, in the face of, for example, "shahidmobiles".

B-19 with the Epoch complex based on the BMP-3

Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation

B-19 fits into the network-centric doctrinewar (combining reconnaissance and weapons of destruction into a single network with the transmission of information in real time) as part of a single information and control system. The fire control system is two-channel, electronic searches for and recognizes targets automatically, offering, at the discretion of the crew, to fire one type of weapon or another, simultaneously or alternately.

A few years ago, the Epoch module is in full swingshone even on the BMP-2 models. Despite the fact that the module, in fact, was ready, they were waiting for new platforms so as not to pile up the newest tower on decrepit skeletons. The fact that the Epoch was demonstrated to us at the BMP-3 speaks about one thing: none of the promising platforms - neither Kurganets, nor T-15, nor Boomerang have left their parade demonstration condition to this day and are not yet ready for real combat operations. ...

Uranium-9

A combat robot that looks like a small infantry fighting vehicle, equipped with a 30 mm cannon, and its missile kit can be… almost anyone. These include ATGMs, MANPADS, and even launchers for thermobaric ammunition such as RPO “Shmel”, which have never been seen on vehicles before.

Uranus 9, seemingly frightening

Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation

Despite the obvious interest of the media, Uran-9 alsoThe technique is already known, moreover, tested in Syria several years ago. Then there were complaints about the car, and about almost everything at once. A report on this was published by RIA Novosti in 2018.

The chassis, guides androad wheels, suspension - everything did not meet the reliability requirements. The military was also bothered by constant malfunctions of the 30-mm cannon and failure/delay in the firing of the missile launch chain. The hardware also failed - the thermal imaging channel of the optical sighting station regularly failed, it was impossible to fire on the move, reconnaissance and target search were limited to 2000 meters, and even in external control the military criticized the operators' screens and sights.

At the same time, RIA also referred to the opinions of specialists. And experts replied that it would be possible to create a vehicle suitable for warfare in no less than 10-15 years. But it turns out that we are seeing military robots already in 2021, and, of course, it is interesting how much has improved over the past three years. Such machines are still very dependent on operators and are very poor at understanding themselves - this connection between the machine and the operator today remains the weakest point of the entire structure.

Sapper Uranus-6 splintered during testing

RIA News

The main purpose of using robots is obvious -preserving the lives of soldiers, and of course, we are talking primarily about highly qualified soldiers working in the most dangerous conditions. Therefore, Uran-9 is positioned as a reconnaissance and assault complex, including for fire support, and therefore its body kit can be extremely diverse.

By the way, the younger brother, the sapper Uran-6 for a long timesold in the world market, and quite successfully. But so far it is clear that robots in intense combat are still a (bright?) Future. Either the technologies are imperfect for this all over the world, or so far only in our country - something is not yet noticeable that the United States and other countries demonstrate powerful uninhabited ground combat vehicles.

Most likely, the Uranus-9 robots are still just a gift to dear guests at the Zapad-2021 exercises.

Agriculture

My favorite in the exercise is the new engineeringsystem, namely ISDM (Engineering System of Remote Mining). There is nothing futuristic or particularly memorable about the appearance of the car. This is an eight-wheeled tractor based on KamAZ with transport and launch containers for 122-mm ammunition. At first it may seem that this is just a new MLRS (multiple launch rocket system) or their next modernization.

But something else is important:the stuffing of this machine is mines, that is, it is capable of mining areas in a matter of minutes with the help of special ammunition. MLRS, which have been in service for a long time, had and still have such opportunities, but "Agriculture" is a completely new level. The car is equipped with satellite navigation, an on-board computer and a weather station.

ISDM is capable of laying minefields of differentconfigurations and difficulties at distances up to 15 km. Control officers immediately receive a detailed map of the spread using a computer and know exactly where the minefield is located. You can pre-enter configuration and density tasks into the computer, and, depending on your operational tasks, provide passages for your own troops with accurate information in the obstacles so that no one is accidentally blown up during maneuvers.

Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation

The task of the new wunderwafe is to interfere with the enemydrive around near the line of contact and inflict damage on him if he plans to regroup or transfer troops to a new location. The "Agriculture" machine has already shown itself in command and staff exercises. According to the Geneva Convention, mines are equipped with remote detonation and self-destruction systems - as the obstacle becomes unnecessary, the military will easily dismantle it, and self-detonation ensures that the minefield will not remain in the fields forever.
