Autonomous robots have learned to assemble into a single floating structure

Project Roboat's drones use cameras, lidar and computer vision algorithms to

search for other robots with QR-like tags, and then take position to dock on command. If the docking is unsuccessful, the robots try the operation again.

The docking mechanism itself is a “ball-socket” system in which a laser is used to determine when the ball is inside, fixing the arriving robot.
