Backstage Mandalorean: How Stagecraft Technology Works for the Shooting of the Series

Last November, at the Disney + streaming service, the premiere of the series "Mandalorets" from the universe took place

Star Wars. At this time, the shooting of the second season is already in full swing, but for now photos from the set have appeared on the network.

How "Mandalorets" was shot

A large part of the first season was shot ina single pavilion in the form of a huge dome, and most of the scenery exists only in the form of computer graphics. And all thanks to the special Stagecraft technology.

Its essence is simple: instead of real scenery and a green screen, huge LED displays were installed in the background, which broadcast the necessary landscape. To create digital backgrounds in the series, Unreal Engine, a game engine by Epic Games, was used.

“ALWAYS SEE ALSO LIKE YOUWe shot on the water and almost didn’t use special effects. Thanks to such an approach, we are having more freedom. When the camera moves, all the objects that are in the distance [and displayed on the hood] also change. I don’t think that a couple of years ago, we could take off in such a way. This is a very, very new technology, ”said director Bryce Dallas Howard.

For example, when shooting a ship, only part of it was recreated - the rest was broadcast on the screen. This is much cheaper than building the entire ship.

They say Stagecraft technology is also not cheap, but it's still less laborious and no more expensive than real scenery.
