The authors of a recent study suggest that bacteria on meat may cause urinary infections.
Previous studies have supported the ideathat meat-borne bacteria can pass through the gastrointestinal tract and cause UTIs once they are released. However, experts didn't know how often this might happen. The authors of the study, published in the journal One Health, provided convincing evidence, but it cannot be called perfect. Thus, it uses data collected in 2012 in Flagstaff, Arizona, which may not accurately reflect current rates of meat-related UTIs nationwide.
However, researchers found that about8% of UTIs are associated with E. coli strains found in retail meat products in the area. If this 8% were projected to apply to the rest of the country, the authors estimate that food poisoning from foodborne E. coli strains ranges from 480,000 to 640,000 UTIs per year.
"Most people understand that usingEating raw meat or accidentally ingesting bacteria from meat may cause stomach upset. Every two weeks from January 1 to January 31In December 2012, the researchers collected bacteria samples from all available brands of raw chicken, turkey and pork sold at nine major grocery chains in Flagstaff. During the same period, they analyzed all the E. coli strains isolated from urine and blood samples at the Medical Center. center of Flagstaff, the main clinical laboratory serving Flagstaff and surrounding cities.
