Baldur's Gate 3 is not for fans: details about the plot, combat system and 20 minutes of gameplay from PAX East 2020

As promised, Larian held a presentation at PAX East 2020, revealing more details about Baldur's Gate 3.

What is known

The plot of Baldur's Gate 3 starts after the events"board games" Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus. Adherents of the cult of the Absolute want to overthrow the old order, and begin to attack the city of Baldur's Gate. The main character is kidnapped by mind flayers and infused with a parasite that gives him power. However, if you don’t get rid of him, then in a few days the character himself will turn into his kidnapper. This is where the main conflict arises - to resist the dark forces or to submit and take over the Forgotten Realms.

The main change compared to the originalduology - turn-based battles. Larian abandoned real-time combat with a tactical pause, which makes the game closer to Divinity: Original Sin, which fans also noticed.

The developers also added variabilityin battles. Now the positioning of the fighters on the field plays a role. For example, a hero under the player's control can push an enemy off a cliff, but opponents can also pull off a similar trick. In combat, you can also use the environment, and, for example, an archer can light an arrow to add points to damage.

The player can now split a group by sendingsome heroes to battle, and others, for example, to the city for supplies. You can call up to four characters into a squad, compared to six in the first games in the series. There will be more than eight classes, as the developers promise to expand the list closer to the release. Plus there will be a multi-class system.

The game will also feature online multiplayer for four and local co-op with split-screen for two.

The dialogue has also been changed. Now, during conversations, the camera lowers to the level of the characters' faces. The player will still choose options for lines, but his character will remain mute.

Larian plans to launch the game in early access in the coming months. Gamers will have access to the first act of the story campaign, six classes and five characters that can be taken into the squad.
