The study involved 56 adolescents.They were divided into two groups. The first did at least two high-intensity interval training sessions per week for 16 weeks. The 8 to 20 minute workout included a combination of aerobic exercise and weight training.

Participants underwent brain scans before and after16-week period to assess changes caused by exercise. It turned out that those who exercised increased the concentration of two markers of metabolic activity in the brain. In addition, changes in the hippocampus have been associated with improved muscle and working memory.
