Researchers from Harvard Medical School's Brigham and Women's Hospital published
Previously, scientists conducted a randomized doublea blind placebo-controlled study involving 25,871 people from the United States - VITAL. During the long-term trial, some patients were given vitamin D (2000 IU), the second group was given fish oil (1 g), and the control group received a placebo. The results showed that vitamin D supplementation was beneficial in preventing cancer, heart attack, or stroke in the general sample. At the same time, a correlation was observed between BMI and the effectiveness of supplements.
In the new work, scientists analyzed data from 16515 participants in the original trial who donated blood before starting the drugs and 2,742 participants who donated blood two years later. The researchers measured levels of total and free vitamin D, as well as many other biomarkers associated with it, its metabolites, and substances that affect vitamin absorption.
Researchers found that vitamin D supplementationincreases most of the biomarkers associated with its metabolism in all people, regardless of their weight. BUT, this increase was significantly less in people with elevated BMI.
This study sheds light on why wewe have seen a 30–40% reduction in deaths from cancer, autoimmune disease, and other diseases with vitamin D supplements in people with lower BMI, but minimal benefit in people with higher BMI.

The researchers believe that the results of the workwill help develop effective methods for the prevention of a complex of diseases for overweight people. In future research, it is necessary to choose a dose of vitamins that will be suitable for people with a BMI of more than 25, taking into account the characteristics of metabolism.
