Biologists find surprising similarities between Alzheimer's and long-term COVID-19

In a new study, scientists from Australia's La Trobe University found that proteins generated

SARS-CoV-2 virus, can formclumps similar to those found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. Biologists speculate that this mechanism may underlie persistent neurological symptoms such as brain fog. It has already been observed in many patients suffering from long-term COVID-19.

Many of the symptoms of long COVID-19may resemble the earliest stages of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. This has prompted some researchers to study the similarities between the two diseases.

Now scientists have confirmed the amazing similaritybetween Alzheimer's disease and long COVID-19. They presented evidence that the new coronavirus may generate protein clumps similar to those observed in the brains of patients with dementia. The results are published in the journal Nature Communications.

Using a combination of computer modelingand in vitro experiments, scientists have shown that two specific peptides generated by the SARS-CoV-2 virus can assemble into structures reminiscent of the accumulations of toxic amyloid proteins often seen in Alzheimer's disease.

However, the study authors noted thatFurther work is needed to understand the impact of these protein clusters on humans. However, these early results already suggest a plausible mechanism to explain the persistent neurological symptoms observed in patients with long COVID-19.
