BIOS-4 is to be part of a lunar base that will allow the first lunar settlers to live and perform tasks
Interestingly, the first task to developthe closed life support system was installed by the Soviet pioneer of cosmonautics Sergei Korolev. In the 70s of the last century, it was in Krasnoyarsk that BIOS-3 was created. Then the system was a bunker with a living module, as well as three compartments filled with algae and plants. BIOS-3 was even used for real experiments. Three people lived in the system for 180 days. Scientists managed to complete the task of providing 100% oxygen and 95% water supply. Unfortunately, that system was not completely closed.
Director of the Institute of Biophysics SB RAS AndreyDegermendzhi announced that over the past decades, it has been possible to create systems for processing organic waste, cleaning gases, as well as separating salt from human excreta.
“It remains to connect all availabletechnology into one system and make BIOS-4. Just the other day, a memorandum was signed between the state corporation Roscosmos and the Chinese National Space Administration on the creation of a scientific lunar station. This means you need to start working right now. You can’t hesitate, because just basic experiments will take 3-4 years. We need a new Korolev, a leader who will set in motion work of planetary significance.”
