BioScience report: climate change is nearing critical

Previously, scientists published in the journal BioScience a declaration of a climate emergency, which

signed by more than 11 thousand scientists from 153 countries. Now an international group of scientists has published its update.

In the new document, the authors note an increase in natural disasters:

  • devastating floods,
  • drought,
  • storms
  • forest fires.

The authors estimate that 2020 was the second hottest year on record, with the five hottest years after 2015.

There is growing evidence that weWe are approaching or have already passed critical points in such important elements of the Earth system as coral reefs, the Amazon rainforest, and the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets.

William Ripple, lead author of the paper and professor of ecology

The authors note that climate deterioration occurs every year, as humanity continues to use the Earth's resources as usual.

Therefore, according to the authors, it is necessary to shiftworld energy priorities in the direction of radical reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, in particular, methane, to create strategic climate reserves for carbon storage, to introduce payments for carbon use, as well as to take effective measures to protect biodiversity.
