Boom Supersonic develops engine for Overture supersonic aircraft

According to a Boom Supersonic press release, the new Overture supersonic aircraft will be equipped with the new Symphony engine,

which is optimized specifically for him.

The new Symphony engine isturbofan system with medium bypass and zero carbon emissions. Lightweight materials will reduce operating costs by 10% compared to other supersonic engines.

Earlier this year, Rolls-Royceannounced that it will no longer collaborate with Boom Supersonic in the development of a supersonic aircraft engine. The famed British engineering firm explained that “the supersonic commercial aviation market is not a priority.”

As Boom Supersonic representatives explained,The startup will now collaborate with three organizations—Florida Turbine Technologies (FTT) for engine design, GE Additive for consulting on 3D printing technologies, and StandardAero for maintenance.

Now that the Symphony project is underway, Boom says the Overture aircraft will enter production in 2024, with the first test flight scheduled for 2027.
