Bosch Virtual Visor: AI visor sun visor with partial transparency and partial dimming

Bosch presented a prototype of a smart sun visor for cars at CES 2020.

And it has already won the CES 2020 Best Innovation award in the In-Car Entertainment and Safety category.

How it works

All cars have sun visors, however, they block not only the sun, but also the view. In addition, statistics from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) say that sun glare causes thousands of accidents every year, and the risk of a car accident when the sun blinds drivers is 16% higher than in normal weather conditions.

That's why Bosch came up with a “smart” visorcalled Virtual Visor. Essentially, this is a regular liquid crystal display, divided into small zones, similar to a honeycomb. Unlike a regular visor, this one only darkens the driver's eye area, leaving the rest of the screen transparent.

This Bosch Virtual Visor requires a camera. It tracks the position of the driver's eyes and the direction of the sun based on the shadow on the face. As a result, only part of the display is darkened and, accordingly, only the driver’s eye area. The rest of the screen remains transparent and does not block the view of the road.

When to expect

So far this is a prototype, far from ideal:Bosch Virtual Visor does not work properly, and the panel itself is not transparent enough. Therefore, Bosch intends to finalize the “smart” visor in order to begin mass production.

The company is also in talks with car manufacturers to bring the technology to market.
