British architects have built a house that can be used on Mars

A prototype of a house that is fully adapted to the harsh conditions of Mars was presented in Bristol. Project "Building a

Martian House" was the result of collaboration between artists, scientists, architects and engineers.

Two-storey house with an area of 53 sq.m is powered by solar panels and is designed to be lightweight and withstand the environmental challenges that will be encountered on Mars. For example, the inhabitants of the house are not afraid of a temperature of -63 ° C and the effects of galactic and cosmic radiation.

The top level is designed to be placed onsurfaces and is formed using pressurized gold-coated inflatable foil, making it light enough to be transported to Mars. In the prototype, the foil is filled with ordinary air so that it can be reused. Under actual Martian conditions, this area would be filled with regolith, Martian soil, which would provide protection from solar and cosmic radiation.

In the above-ground part of the building there will be a spaciousliving room. With the help of hydroponic installations, a large number of plants will be grown here, which, according to the authors, should help participants in future missions to relax and unwind. In order to conserve water, the hydroponic system will be connected to the washing and kitchen water systems. In addition, the living room has a large panoramic window. Now the Bristol Marina is visible behind it, but on Mars it will be replaced by unique landscapes of red sand.

The lower level will be built underground inlava tubes that exist below the surface of the planet. Since Mars has a thin atmosphere, this will protect the inhabitants from high levels of radiation. The prototype at Bristol is encased in plywood. On this level is the control room with all the life support systems powering the house, two compact sleeping "pods"; along with a shower and a "martian toilet" with low water consumption.
