By 2100, 95% of the oceans will be uninhabitable

Ocean surface climates have characteristic temperature, acidity, and concentrations of aragonite, a mineral

which many marine animals use forformation of bones and shells. The vast majority of marine life is accustomed to these conditions. But due to rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere, the climate at the ocean's surface may be changing.

The authors of the new work used models of the global climate of the oceans, according to which they predicted two scenarios for the development of events:

  • First, the peak in greenhouse gas emissions will occur by 2050 and will continue to decline until the end of the century,
  • Second, emissions will continue to rise over the next 80 years.

The first scenario showed that 36% of the surfaceof all oceans will not change in any way until the 21st century, but by 2100 this percentage of the territory will have completely changed living conditions. In an extreme scenario, 95% of the oceans' surface would immediately become uninhabitable for marine species. 

These changes mean that the surface of the oceanswill no longer be suitable for marine life. Marine life that exists closer to the surface is adapting to climate change by moving lower, but the study suggests their options may be limited in the future by near-uniform warming and acidification of the water.

Ultimately, the researchers note, the only way to stop this is if ocean-warming emissions stop.
