California Authorized Self-Driving Delivery Service

Robotics startup Nuro plans to begin driverless delivery operations as early as next year. Previously

it tested its R2 cars in the state in April, but the permit will allow it to charge people a service fee.

The speed of the company's vehicles will be limited to 56 km / h, and work will be limited by the mandatory condition of "good weather".

"Issuance of the first permitThe deployment marks an important milestone in the development of autonomous vehicles in California, said California Department of Motor Vehicles Director Steve Gordon. We will continue to focus on the safety of the motoring public as this technology develops.”

Nuro was founded by two formerGoogle engineers and funded by the Japanese firm Softbank. Cars are designed to work without a driver or passengers. The R2 uses radar, thermal imaging and 360-degree cameras to control movement. There is no steering wheel, pedals or rear-view mirrors.

The car has an oval frame, which is smaller than most cars in the United States. The package also includes two temperature-controlled compartments for delivery.

In a previous test in Houston, Texas, in February, R2 delivered pizza for Domino's Pizza, groceries from Kroger and grocery items for Walmart.
