Caution! iPhone 12 and MagSafe May Affect Pacemakers and Other Medical Devices

Earlier this month, the Hearth Rhythm Journal published the results of a study of American doctors,

who claim that the new iPhone 12 may interfere with the operation of medical devices. Now Apple itself has admitted this.

What does it mean

The corresponding document appeared on the websitecompanies in the support section. As it turns out, smartphones and MagSafe magnetic charging can cause electromagnetic interference to medical devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators.

“iPhone contains magnets as well as componentsand radio transmitters that emit electromagnetic fields. All MagSafe accessories (sold separately) also contain magnets, MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo contain radio transmitters. These magnets and electromagnetic fields can affect the operation of medical devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators. Although all iPhone 12 models contain more magnets than previous iPhone models, they are not expected to pose a greater risk of electromagnetic interference to medical devices than previous iPhone models,” the document states.

To avoid interference, the distance between a smartphone with MagSafe accessories and medical equipment should be at least 15 cm, and if wireless charging occurs, more than 30 cm.

For more specific advice, Apple advises contacting your healthcare provider and the device manufacturer.
