Cajamarquilla was a city builtfrom clay around 200 BC in the pre Inca period, and inhabited until about 1500 It is believed that between 10,000 and 20,000 people lived there.
High salt content in sandin the region, probably caused the natural mummification of a young man, whose gender has not yet been determined. Pieces of skin remained on the arms and legs, and on the head, scientists found hair that had been separated from the body. The jaw also contained remains of teeth.
“The find is very important because it is so well preserved,” the scientists write.
Next to the mummy, the team discovered a stonea weapon, a plate, a copper needle and the remains of fabric, corn and chili. In February 2022, archaeologists found 20 mummies in Cajamarquilla, including eight children.
