“Charging with clean energy” in iOS 16: what is it and why not for everyone?

Continuing to insist on the environmental friendliness of its products, Apple mentioned in a fresh press release about the launch of iOS 16

some kind of “charging with pure energy”(Clean Energy Charging). From the short and rather vague description, it follows that the essence is to charge when the network uses the cleanest energy sources. It can be assumed that Apple intends to rely on the schedule of peak loads on the power grid. The fact is that the daily cycle of electricity consumption by the population varies greatly depending on the time of day. Because of this, at peak times (during the day), energy is generated by burning expensive gas, while the night load is handled mainly by coal-fired power plants, far from the definition of environmentally friendly.

However, according to experts, the power grid indifferent regions can vary greatly in peak load schedules, generation strategies, and therefore their “purity”, and therefore the most “clean energy” may well be produced during the day, while increased nighttime consumption may increase coal combustion. In a word, it is not surprising why Apple did not dare to loudly announce such a controversial technology at the presentation, and in the press release devoted a couple of lines to it in small print at the very end of the text.

And also “charging with clean energy” willAvailable only in the USA. In short, it is completely unclear how exactly the company plans to implement it in practice and how this will actually affect the reduction of CO2 emissions.
