A team of researchers led by the University of California, San Diego, has studied the possibility of
For their analysis, the scientists used medical questions published on the Reddit website. One of the services of this network (AskDocs) allows users to ask medical questions that are answeredResearchers randomly selected 195 messages from AskDocs in which a medical professional answered a question.
The same questions were asked to the ChatGPT chatbot withoutany clarifications. The researchers collected answers from doctors and texts written by a neural network. All questions and recommendations in depersonalized form were shown to a group of experts - licensed medical professionals. They didn't know which of the answers were written by doctors and which were written by AI.
The experts compared the answers and recommendations based on the quality of the information and the level of empathy – sensitivity and empathy towards the patient – and had to answer which of the answers seemed best to them.As a result, doctors preferred ChatGPT answers to doctors' answers in 79% of cases.
ChatGPT responses were rated significantly higher inquality and sensitivity. The proportion of good or very good quality responses was 3.6 times higher for the neural network than for physicians. And, to the surprise of the scientists, the chatbot showed great empathy: experts rated 45.1% of the AI responses as empathetic or very empathetic, and only 4.6% of the medical responses.

The researchers emphasize that the study concernsonly online consultations with the help of specialized services and does not replace a full examination at the clinic. They do not think that the neural network should replace or displace doctors, but it can become an additional tool to reduce the burden on medical institutions and provide access to quality care to people who are deprived of it.
