China uses two drones to seed rain clouds in Sichuan province to combat
China Meteorological Administration launcheddrones in northern and southeastern Sichuan on Thursday morning, and the aircraft will eventually cover an area of 6,000 square kilometers in operations that will last until Monday, state news agency CCTV said.
An ice-forming substance, such as silver iodide, is dropped into the cloud, which already contains a sufficient amount of moisture. Raindrops gather around the substance, gaining weight until they begin to fall.
China has long used this technology to water fields, cool burning cities, and provide clear skies during events like the Olympics.
