Jixia was founded in the 3rd century BC.in the city of Linzi, the capital of the kingdom of Qi. The creation of the academy dates back to the period of the Warring States - a time in the history of China, when a single state was divided into several independent warlike territories. This era lasted from the 5th century BC. before the unification of China by Emperor Qin Shi Huang in 221 BC.

“The war was an incentive for everything, including forintellectual and political change, says Zhou Boqun, an associate professor at the University of Hong Kong. “People wanted to end the eternal war, people wanted a stable society. It was a desire shared by almost everyone."

According to scientists, Jixia Academy was the answer tosociety's request. The rulers of the Qi kingdom offered favorable conditions to intellectuals from all over China to move and work at the Academy. Jixia has become a place of attraction for representatives of various philosophical schools. Among the scientists who worked there were, for example, representatives of the philosophical "school of law", Moism, Confucianism and Taoism.

Chinese researchers have access to a largethe number of bamboo manuscripts that contain information about the existence of the Academy. At the same time, there is no data on how life was organized, how she worked and how rich she was. Scientists hope that excavations at Jixia will uncover artifacts that will shed light on how philosophers lived and worked.

“We now have many bamboo manuscriptsWarring States period,” says Zhou. “I hope that archaeologists will find more manuscripts that can be confidently attributed to the work of the Jixia Academy.”
