Chinese mind-reading helmet sounds the alarm when a person sees porn content

A team of scientists from Beijing Jiaotong University in China has developed and tested a device for

“mind reading”, which will help implement the country’s policy of censoring porn content. This was reported by the South China Morning Post.

A team of electrical engineers joined the workcensor staff and artificial intelligence to prototype a device that sounds an alarm when an obscene image appears.

As engineers noted, the performance of the human eye and brain in image recognition is much higher than that of AI-based algorithms. Especially when the images contain complex backgrounds.

In their study, scientists discovered thatan image of a nude, even if shown for half a second among a stream of other images, caused surprise in the observer. Researchers claim that the developed helmet can pick up any burst of brain waves that may result from such content.

Viewing porn content is a crime inChina. The country has launched several protocols to scan the Internet and social media platforms. The goal is to find and remove obscene content. For example, authorities have deployed extensive use of artificial intelligence to flag content and have also hired professional censors.

To improve their performance, scientists have developedspecial device. It makes searching for porn content more efficient by harnessing the power of the human brain and then tracking illicit content using available technology.
