Chinese satellites to make Earth images available in real time

Wang Mi, a professor at Wuhan University and the main developer of the Luojia-3 01 project, said that with the help of the new

technology, satellite images of any point on Earth will be available to users with a delay of no more than 10 minutes.

Launch of first satellite Luojia-3 01 scheduledfor July 2022. According to engineers, the satellite is equipped with a powerful telescope and can take photos or videos from orbit with a resolution of 70 cm. This is enough, for example, to determine the make of a car in a picture.

The first run will help test the technology. Once deployed in Earth orbit, a network of satellites will provide information from all over the Earth.

“Now such technology is available only to the military in certain countries,” Wang Mi said. “We will open a free service for users around the world.”

Most surveillance satellites typically compress andsave data after shooting. The information is transmitted to the Earth during the passage of vehicles over the ground station. The resulting images are processed by a computer and converted into convenient formats. This process usually takes several hours or days.

According to the design team, Luojia-3 01 canindependently process images using AI. And instead of transmitting data through a ground station, it will use the nearest Chinese communications satellite. For the exchange, Ka-band frequencies will be used, which are used, for example, by Starlink satellites.

While the satellite will launch in July, no date has yet been announced when the service will be made available to the public.
