The device works by focusing high-intensitylaser pulses in air to create a plasma or ionized gas that emits energy in the form of light. The researchers said they used a 3D scanner to position the pixel dots and form the characters precisely in the air, but did not explain how it works.

Physicists plan to improve their technology. By increasing control over the distribution of the laser pulse, they will be able to create brighter and more full-color images in the air.
The authors of the development believe that this technology will find practical application in high-precision manufacturing, brain imaging, medicine and quantum computing.
