Chip based on magnetic vortices taught to recognize handwritten text

Engineers from the RIKEN Research Institute have developed a microchip based on skyrmions - tiny

magnetic vortices. The microchip, which consumes a small amount of energy, successfully recognizes handwritten numbers.

The created device consists of rods, coated with a platinum-cobalt-iridium film, which may contain skyrmions several micrometers wide. To enter the data, the researchers encoded the information in a magnetic field, which, when applied to the skyrmions, generates a voltage. This output voltage depends on the number and size of skyrmions present.

The researchers trained the device using more13,000 images of handwritten digits from 0 to 9. They converted the images into magnetic inputs and tuned the device so that the voltage outputs accurately displayed the correct digit. The scientists then tested the chip with 5,000 other images. The experiment showed that the microchip recognizes numbers with an accuracy of about 95%, which is superior to alternative neuromorphic devices.

In modern systems for data recognitionartificial neural networks are used. They consume a lot of energy when running on conventional silicon chips, scientists explain. Low-energy computing platforms that mimic the properties of the brain and use reservoir computing could serve as an effective alternative, scientists believe.

In such devices, magnetic vortices behavelike particles and can be manipulated by magnetic fields. At the same time, skyrmions have a "memory effect" - their structure and behavior reflect previous exposure to magnetic fields. This effect is similar to the energy-saving mode of the brain: neurons store previous information, which serves as the basis for processing new data.

Previously, Hi-Tech talked about the creation of the first prototype of a computer based on skyrmions.
