Colombian judge used ChatGPT to decide case

According to Vice, 1st District of Columbia Judge Juan Manuel Padilla Garcia

used a chatbot based on artificial intelligence ChatGPT to solve a case in the city of Cartagena. He noted this in court documents on January 30th.

“We really strive to optimizethe time it takes to make decisions after confirming the information provided by the AI – Garcia wrote in the court document.”

The case was about a health insurance company and the family of an autistic child regarding the child's health insurance.

Apparently, the judge based his decision in the casebased on chatbot responses about legal precedents and claims that all responses were supported by the facts of this case (which is actually an important condition, given the random bias and unreliability of such bots). He claims that he wanted to speed up the decision-making process and he succeeded.

While it is difficult to say unambiguously whether this is good orIt’s bad that artificial intelligence is entering our lives so rapidly and is already even participating in solving court cases, but in any case, partial optimization of routine work with the help of AI does not look so bad.
