Components from the USA, Japan, Switzerland, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and South Korea were found in Russian cruise missiles and air defense systems

A report from the Royal United Services Institute says Russian weapons used in Ukraine were found to contain

450 foreign-made components.

What is known

After disassembling cruise missiles and missile systemsRussian air defense experts were able to establish that most of the 27 weapons are based on Western components. Approximately 66% of Western parts are made by American companies. A quarter of this comes from electronics from Analog Devices and Texas Instrument. Royal United Services Institute experts also found components from Japan, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain and South Korea.

For example, the 9M727 cruise missile is equipped with 31elements of foreign production. The rocket uses components from Texas Instruments, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Cypress Semiconductor (owned by Infineon AG).

In the X-101 cruise missile worth more than $10 million31 foreign components were also found. The chips were developed by American companies Intel and Xilinx. The latter belongs to AMD. At the same time, both processor giants say that they adhere to the sanctions and stopped the supply of components to Russia. Similar announcements were made by Analog Devices, Texas Instruments and Infineon AG.

Note that a lot of microchips and otherparts are also used for non-military purposes, so Russia could easily purchase them on the Internet. For example, we recently wrote that there are chips in the guidance units of Tornado-S missiles that are sold on AliExpress.

However, experts from the Royal United Services Institutefound approximately 80 chips subject to US export controls. This means that companies must check chips before shipping to make sure they don't end up in Russia for military use.

Overall, the Royal United Services studyThe Institute has demonstrated that the Russian military-industrial complex is still dependent on foreign components. They are used both in long-range munitions and in conventional drones, which are consumables in war.

After the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russia founda way to gain access to Western microchips despite sanctions. Primarily thanks to distributors from Asia. For example, in the spring of 2021, one of the companies purchased Texas Instruments electronics worth $600,000 through an intermediary from Hong Kong. A little later, the same company spent more than $1 million to purchase Xilinx chips.
