Experts collected data on the number of methane leaks that were covered in the world media after the leak
According to the data, it was the largest methane release at one time in human history. It is twice as large as in the Aliso Canyon accident in California in 2015.
As noted in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, annual methane emissions from the oil and gas sector during the period from 2008 to 2017 amounted to 70 million tons. During a leak from the Nord Stream pipelines, the same amount of methane was released into the atmosphere in just one day.
As a result, despite the huge amount of gas released into the atmosphere, the consequences of damage to the gas pipeline did not greatly affect the climate. Every day people harm the planet much more.
The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report is the latestas of 2022, a similar report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Released seven years after the previous Fifth Report in 2013-2014.

September 26, 2022 two underwaterThe Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines for transporting natural gas from Russia to Germany were damaged. A huge amount of gases, primarily methane, entered the ocean, and then into the atmosphere.
Methane is the second most commonan anthropogenic greenhouse gas after CO2, but has a more pronounced greenhouse effect. The question of whether this incident will affect the climate has become one of the most debated questions in the world.
