Contactless payments increased the average check for purchases of Russians

The study deals with contactless payment from a smartphone via Apple Pay and Google Pay. The authors of the report compared

payments for 2019 on websites and applications through contactless payment systems and other methods among companies that have connected to the Yandex.Checkout service.

Most often, contactless payment through the service is connected to companies that sell food products - 24% of them accept payments through Apple Pay and Google Pay.

In other categories of goods and services, the share of sites andthere are fewer applications using contactless payment services: tickets to cinema, theaters, museums and concerts - 23% of venues, souvenirs and hobby goods, trainings and master classes, beauty and health products - 20% in each category, clothes and shoes - 18%, automotive parts and accessories - 17%, household and garden products - 16%.

“The fact that the average check for contactlesspayments are often higher than when paying with cards, it is quite logical: it is easier for a person to pay for a purchase contactlessly - there is no need to take out a card and waste time entering its data. Contactless payment also eliminates the possibility of payment being rejected due to an incorrectly entered card number. Perhaps the only thing that can prevent a purchase in this case is a lack of money in the account. Therefore, the conversion of payments via Apple Pay and Google Pay reaches 94%"

Among Russian sites connected to Yandex.Kasse, the largest contactless payment turnover was in 2019 at online electronics and home appliance stores. This is an all-Russian trend. The exception is Moscow, where services that sell tickets to cinema, theaters, museums and concerts became leaders in this respect. In Russia, such sites occupy the second place in the turnover of contactless payments.

Earlier it was reported that more than half of Russians find it difficult to do without cashless payments, and the share of the population, which is paid mainly in cash, almost doubled from 2014 to 2018.
