Coronavirus made to glow: can now be tracked in real time

Researchers from the United States managed to change a new type of coronavirus so that it began to glow in

cell cultures and animal tissues. According to the authors of the experiment, the development will help track the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in real time.

Initially, when scientists tried to insertreporter gene that adds fluorescent or bioluminescent proteins to the coronavirus, they failed. Let us recall that reporter genes in molecular biology are genes that are attached to the regulatory sequences of other genes to study the manifestations of genes in cell cultures.

The problem was that such a gene was not enough.was expressed and could not make SARS-CoV-2 "glow" in animal tissues strongly enough. So much so that it can be detected without any problems. However, scientists solved the problem by attaching a reporter gene to the gene that encodes the virus nucleocapsid. As you know, this is the most expressed gene in the new type of coronavirus.

Also from researchersIt was possible to modify the reporter genes so that different strains of the virus were painted in different colors. This way, scientists were able to compare how well antibodies fight different variants of SARS-CoV-2.
