Researchers have created an alternative positioning system that is more accurate and reliable than GPS.Prototype
The peculiarity of the new system is that it uses mobile communications, and not satellites, like GPS. Potentially, this will make it more accurate and reliable, scientists believe.
“We realized that with the help of several advancedinnovation, a telecommunications network can be converted into a very accurate alternative positioning system that works independently of GPS,” explains Jeroen Koelemey from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
The researcher uses a prototype system on a vehicle located on the campus of the Delft University of Technology.

Weak radio signals coming from satellitescan make GPS inaccurate, researchers say. If radio signals are reflected or blocked by buildings, they can no longer transmit precise location and information.
According to the study, the system provides connectivity similar to mobile networks and Wi-Fi networks. It also features better positioning and timing.
The new system can be used in a wide variety of applications, including automated vehicles and next-generation mobile communication systems.
