Created a system for installing solar panels between the rails

Sun-Ways from Switzerland offers to use the space between the rails for the installation of solar

Standard-sized cells installed between the train tracks do not interfereEngineers believe that up to half of all railways in the world can be modernized in this way.

The company uses solar panels,pre-assembled at the factory. Separate elements about a meter long are placed between the tracks and attached to the rails using a piston mechanism. Installation is carried out by a special mechanical train. As he moves, he lays the photovoltaic panels along the paths "like an unwinding carpet."

While other companies are already testing the possibilities of using the space between the rails to create solar panels, Sun-Ways is the first to introduce and patent technology with which solar panels can be easily removed. The ability to temporarily dismantle the panels is necessary for road maintenance.

The company will launch the first test site on the networkrailways near Butts station in Western Switzerland. In the future, engineers plan to cover the entire transport network of the country with a network of their solar panels and go beyond it.

Solar panels can cover over 5,000 km.km of Swiss railways, excluding sections located in tunnels or subject to low light. This would fit a solar array the size of 760 football fields. Such a battery, according to the company, will generate about 1 TWh of electricity per year, or about 2% of all energy consumed in the country.
