Created an "invisible" polymer to deliver drugs to the human body

Researchers have developed a new synthetic substance that could potentially become more

an effective and safe way to deliver drugs to the body.

Currently polyethylene glycol(PEG) is the most commonly used polymer for biomedical applications due to its non-toxicity and high solubility. It has many uses, including coating nanocarriers that carry pharmaceuticals into a patient's bloodstream.

Despite the fact that PEG hasmany advantages, this polymer is not perfect. Researchers are concerned about PEG's own immunogenicity, which means polyethylene glycol causes an unwanted immune response. Now a team of scientists has created a new “active and invisible” polymer, Polythio Glycidyl glycerol (PTGG), which, according to preliminary data, is safer and more effective for drug delivery.

Research published in the JournalThe American Chemical Society found that PTGG is less likely to be detected by the immune system as it moves through the body compared to PEG. It also increased physical stability and protected tissue from oxidative and inflammatory damage.
