Crocodile-faced dinosaur is Europe's biggest carnivore

A huge dinosaur with a crocodile face and a spiny back that roamed the territory of modern England

approximately 125 million years ago, was one of the largest carnivorous animals ever to inhabit Europe.

Paleontologists excavated the remains of this animalon the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England. The researchers nicknamed the newly discovered species "White Rock spinosaurids" after the calcareous geological layer where the fossils were found. Because scientists have only discovered fragments, the animal has yet to be given an official scientific name.

According to a new study publishedin the journal PeerJ Life and Environment, these remains are the youngest spinosaur fossils ever found in the UK. Spinosaurids were bipedal carnivorous dinosaurs with crocodile-like skulls, thin necks, and strong feet. They lived during the Cretaceous period - from 145 to 66 million years ago. The new species is a close relative of the older, potentially amphibious Spinosaurus, which was larger than Tyrannosaurus rex.

“It was a huge animal, over 10m long.Based on some measurements, the remains belong to the largest carnivorous dinosaur ever found in Europe, explains Chris Barker, lead author of the study, in a report from the University of Southampton in England. “It’s a pity that this is known only from such scant material.”

Researchers have discovered fossils of an ancientmonster, including giant pelvic and tail vertebrae, in Cretaceous rocks near Compton China, a region along the southwest coast of the Isle of Wight. The remains are preserved in a rocky structure known as the Vectis Formation, which began about 125 million years ago when sediments from rising sea levels deposited the site of a freshwater coastal lagoon. It was through these lagoon waters and sandbanks that the White Rock spinosaur roamed in search of prey, the study authors reported.
