Czech zoos try to amuse primates with video calls

This unusual way to have fun was used in two Czech zoos: Safari Park Dvur Kralove and

Zoo in Brno. This was done so that the animals received an additional level of social communication with representatives of their species in a neighboring town 150 km away.

Zoo workers said that the soundThe video feed is turned off for security reasons, but the monkeys are showing increased interest in what their relatives are doing elsewhere.

First, the staff say, primates withcautiously approached the screen with protective or threatening gestures. But then we found understanding and began to interact with each other remotely. Young females react especially violently to video calls.

The authors note that the behavior of primates is verylooks human. During stressful situations, they also jump to their feet, begin to react violently to the situation, or, for example, before starting to look at the screen, they gather nuts for themselves to eat while watching.  

Zoo employees explained that they decided onan experiment to entertain chimpanzees who have begun to yearn for daily visitors since the zoos closed last December due to the pandemic.
