DART space probe spotted an asteroid it will collide with in three weeks

The comic probe Double Asteroid Redirection Test, also known as DART, sent back to Earth the first image of the asteroid Didymos and

Dimorphos).

What is known

DART is a spacecraft planetary probedefense. With its help, NASA will work out a method for changing the flight path of asteroids that can be dangerous for the Earth. Didym-Dimorph is a double asteroid that does not pose a threat to our planet.

September 27 at 02:0014 (EET) DART will crash into the asteroid Dimofr. As a result of the impact, its trajectory should change by a fraction of a percent. It is expected that this will be enough for the space agency's telescopes to detect the deviation from the orbit.

DART transmitted to Earth an image received from243 individual shots. The photographs were taken on July 27, 2022 using the DRACO optical navigation camera. At the time of the image, the space probe was over 30 million km away from the double asteroid.

The camera will be used to make the machinewas able to get to the crash site. But now NASA specialists are responsible for the maneuvers. They take pictures every five hours in order to correct the probe's flight path.
