The organization's senior researcher stated thatAs a result of the destruction of a Soviet satellite, a large amount of debris has formed in space, which poses a threat to the Starlink satellite constellation. The Soviet Union launched Kosmos-1408 40 years ago. But Russia decided to destroy it as part of a test of the ASAT anti-satellite missile. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense stated that the resulting fragments do not pose a threat.
According to COMSPOC, in orbit in about nineIn the past few months, more than 6,000 dangerous encounters between Cosmos-1408 fragments and SpaceX satellites have been recorded. By the term "close proximity" the organization means a distance of less than 10 km.
The wreckage of the Soviet apparatus approached 841Starlink communications. How many times American satellites had to dodge is currently being clarified by COMSPOC. At the same time, SpaceX said that since December last year, within six months, the satellites have completed 7,000 maneuvers, including 1,700 evasions due to space debris that was formed after the test of the Russian ASAT rocket.
It is expected that in the future the threat of disruption to workStarlink will descend as the debris from Cosmos-1408 dissipates and breaks down. But at the same time, COMSPOC does not rule out that fragments of the Soviet satellite could become a threat to the ISS.
