Engineers from Osaka University, SoftBank Corporation and Tokyo Institute of Technology developed

To track chemicals in the air inthree dimensions, engineers built odor sensors into the top and front surfaces of the small drone. In addition, they have developed a special algorithm that mimics animal scent tracking, which uses different sensor arrangements to determine the source of emissions.

Scientists conducted a series of experiments tocheck the operation of the created device. The study found that the new algorithm outperforms traditional counterparts and effectively tracks odors even in scenarios where wind direction constantly changes.

At present, the algorithm implementedscientists can work effectively only in a known area that is mapped, since during work it takes into account the features of the relief. The researchers will continue to improve the device so that the drone can track scents in unknown and cluttered environments.
